Google releases Dashboard privacy tool
11.09.2009
(from CNN) Ever wonder what information Google knows about you? With a click or two, now you can find out.
Google released a feature Thursday that lets users see and control data that the Web giant has collected about them. Called Google Dashboard, the service provides an online summary of a user's Google files -- Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa photos and so on -- by collecting pre-existing privacy controls in one place.

American Express OPEN Desktop Dashboard
Driving online usage by providing desktop-level access.
American Express OPEN needed an innovative way of allowing users to have quick assess to their account information throughout the day. Taking this need to heart, 4 Corners designed a unique desktop dashboard solution that allows customers easy, instant, and continuous access to their most important account information and functions. The dashboard runs from an icon on the desktop, is fully customizable by the user, and launches the web Summary of Accounts interface directly.
Collaborating with American Express, 4 Corners was engaged to increase small business online registration for the Summary of Accounts web feature. 4 Corners designed and produced an interactive online presentation and accompanying interactive CD (which was delivered in a direct marking piece) using American Express customer service representatives as experts in providing information about the Summary of Accounts. Thanks to the initiative, record numbers of card members registered and learned about the benefits of available online member services.
McGraw-Hill Construction, a $3.4 trillion global company, needed an online platform to host over a million professionals, linking users to their vast database of resources and materials. To do this, 4 Corners designed the Sweets Network for Products, aimed at connecting people, projects, and products. The network catalogs, describes, facilitates, and helps users (including ten thousand manufacturers, engineers, and architects) interact and discover a myriad of online construction products. In addition, 4 Corners created the branding and advertising collateral including, brochures, rich media banners, multi-tier direct mailers, and print advertisements.
Working with Scholastic, 4 Corners explored the concept of searching for products and took it to a whole new level. The pilot version of the Parent Path is an interactive tool that allows parents and children to search by creating a story (and accompanying avatar) around the child’s grade, age, reading level, and variety of interests. Based on this narrative, users receive finely tuned book recommendations, as well as options to save and share their reading lists. 4 Corners worked closely with Scholastic to create the voice, interactivity, and illustrative style for the wizard, which is now being expanded for further release including the development of a teacher-focused version.

Finally, something for us [few] PC users [left] out there to get excited about! The Beta version of Google Chrome has launched today, and it's only available for those of us fortunate enough to be running Vista. My initial test run of it here is looking pretty good so far - I'm loving the visual representation of your most visited websites as the default homepage. Check it out here!

1.2 Billion in additional sales through a redesign
Office Depot had received customer feedback that the in-store brand experience (which customers felt was very strong) wasn’t matching with the experience users had on the website. A confusing site architecture and overwhelming amount of products left online users feeling dissatisfied. Partnering with Office Depot, 4 Corners took an in-depth look into the architecture and user interface of the site and designed an entirely new offering without changing or adding any new functionality. 4 Corners orchestrated in-depth usability testing sessions, utilizing a rapid prototyping techniques to introduce new solutions while the testing sessions were taking place. Launching just in time for Holiday 2006, the site was an overwhelming success, drastically increasing Office Depot's online sales.

New in the world of search...Cuil
07.29.2008
From former Google employees comes Cuil, the newest super engine to hit the net. I took a quick look around, and so far I really like what I see. It has a great clean design (including the option to view your search results in 2 or 3 columns), and great smart options for sorting your data (a search of the term "Olympics" presented me with tabs for Winter Olympics, Special Olympics, Summer Olympics, and categories such as "2012 Summer Olympics" and "IOC Members"). Cuil also presents a much cleaner summary of each page (in a small paragraph) than its competitors. I wonder if this will prompt enough people to make the switch over from Google...I think I'm convinced.

Twitter finds a new home(page)
07.29.2009
Yesterday, Twitter launched a redesigned homepage, which shows a shift in focus towards search (rather than specific users, as the old homepage highlighted). It seems that this new homepage could be a recognition, on Twitter’s part, of how users have shaped the microblogging platform - it’s now the place where you can find up-to-the-minute information on what’s happening NOW (rather than depending on search engines that are increasingly appearing to post more dated content, dependant on the slower nature of crawling the web and indexing content). Just look at the trends to see what people are talking about right this second (um…M&Ms and William Shatner? Really?). So does this poise Twitter to take on the search behemoths of Google and bing? Only time will tell…

Analyzing the social media engagement of top 100 valuable brands
07.29.2009
Last week the Altimeter Group and Wetpaint released a study that analyzed the 100 most valuable brands (according to BusinessWeek/Interbrand) and how they engage across 11 different online social-media venues.
The result of the study was published as "engagement database" that critiqued the brands on not only their breadth of engagement across these channels, but also their depth, such as whether they reply to comments made on blog posts. Each brand was given a numerical score. The top 10 ENGAGEMENTdb brands with their scores are:
Starbucks (127)
Dell (123)
eBay (115)
Google (105)
Microsoft (103)
Thomson Reuters (101)
Nike (100)
Amazon (88)
SAP (86)
Tie - Yahoo!/Intel (85)
The full report is available at http://bit.ly/KRGNt.
Personally, it's questionable to assume that a company's social engagement can be correlated with its financial performance. But, in Steve Rubel's words "good use of social media could be seen as a proxy for an innovative culture, eagerness to engage with consumers and take risks, a net positive for any business."
Much more interesting then this is however to take a look at what the social media strategy of those brands have in common: All top brands weren't afraid of innovation, did so early, often (also after set-backs) and incrementally:
Starbucks and Dell were early to leverage their fans for corporate crowd-sourcing.
With Nikeplus.com, Nike was early in the game to use an innovative technology in order to connect its worldwide fan base in early 2006.
Quite a few of the top 10 brands embraced Twitter early and in innovative ways. Amazon started offering deals on Twitter back in 2007 and EBay started to live-tweet earnings in 2008.
Microsoft encouraged their employees to blog as early as in the late 1990. Yahoo and Google started and actively promoted their corporate and product blogs in 2004
Other top brands were building out communities to connect customers and employees early on. Microsoft, for example, launched its inventive Channel 9 platform for developers back in 2004

Visa and small business on Facebook
06.24.2008
This Thursday (June 26), Visa will be launching a $2m ad campaign focused around a downloadable Facebook application for small businesses to join a Visa-centric network. The network's focus is to provide "tools and tips on attracting new customers, trimming costs and other ways to make more money" for small business owners, and will also allow member companies to contact each other and network further amongst themselves. Additional content and services will be provided by Google (including maps, calendars, word processing, and expense report and business card templates), the Wall Street Journal, and Entrepreneur magazine.
This seems to pose an interesting question on how big box companies can monetize the popularity of Facebook; an effort that has so far been widely unsuccessful. And this is the first application (that I can think of, anyway) that is specifically targeting the small business owners subset of Facebook users - and with a pool of 80,000 small businesses who have Facebook profiles, the potential for reaching a wide audience is quite large.
So I suppose only time will tell how users will accept a Facebook application not solely for "fun" (i.e. one that won't plaster your profile with Bumper Stickers or pester your friends with "Zombie" invitations), and how advertising will eventually manifest onto Facebook.

Google Chrome, too simple?
09.18.2008
The first time I used Google Chrome, I was suprised on how simple the design of the browser. The only visible functionality are the most common use buttons such as: back, forward, refresh, favorite, address and setting buttons. The address field looks like any regular browser, but it smarts enough to distinguish between site url and search text. It also gives text prediction as you type.
But after using with this new browser for about a week, I'm starting to notice the limitation of this new browser. Unlike FIrefox, Chrome does not has the functionality to add adds-on to the browser. This limitation make me miss the convinient of accessing my favorite site through my virtual bookmark.
I'm hoping that google will bring back the virtual bookmark toolbar to Chrome.

I love stumbling across creative applications of Google Maps, and TripWolf incorporates one of the coolest. It combines the GMap with Q&As (think Yahoo Answers), social networking (integrated with Facebook), and a wide breadth of information to create one of the coolest travel advisor sites out there. The "Logo" Games
08.11.2008
This morning I came across a really fascinating article covering the debate over inexpensive online logo & "branding" companies by Doug Bartow (id29) via the Under Consideration design discussion blog Speak Up.
It highlights the ongoing debate of accessibility of design for all (income brackets) versus "...the devaluation of the design process altogether, particularly in brand development and identity design, which many consider the pinnacle of our field." – by cheapening the proverbial playing field.
In his field study of this issue, Doug commissions 4 different online companies to come up with logo options for a fictitious project and then analyzes and critiques the results. It is a good exploration of what you really get from these types of logo chop shops.
The Challenge: Hire four online logo design companies, give them the same visual identity problem to solve, then critique the results.

Some surprising Twitter Stats
07.29.2009
Last month a social media analytics provider called Sysomos published a in-depth report on Twitter usage. Here are the 10 conclusions that might help a brand to better understand the potential uses of Twitter:
72.5% of all users joining during the first five months of 2009.
85.3% of all Twitter users post less than one update/day
21% of users have never posted a Tweet
93.6% of users have less than 100 followers, while 92.4% follow less than 100 people.
5% of Twitter users account for 75% of all activity
New York has the most Twitters users, followed by Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco and Boston; while Detroit was the fast-growing city over the first five months of 2009
More than 50% of all updates are published using tools, mobile and Web-based, other than Twitter.com. TweetDeck is the most popular non-Twitter.com tool with 19.7% market share.
There are more women on Twitter (53%) than men (47%)
Of the people who identify themselves as marketers, 15% follow more than 2,000 people. This compares with 0.29% of overall Twitter users who follow more than 2,000 people.
